On 1 March 2024, the Cabinet of Japan announced the introduction of the draft Bill to partially amend the Consumer Product Safety Act. The Bill will be submitted to the National Diet for adoption in the 213 ordinary session. The Bill includes local operation requirements for foreign businesses selling products to domestic consumers through online platforms. The foreign businesses will be subject to notification under the Consumer Affairs Act and will be required to appoint a responsible person in Japan. Further, the Bill also includes measures requiring online platform providers to remove products that pose a risk to domestic consumers.
