United States of America: Signed Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act

On 20 June 2024, the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act (SB 7694) was signed into law. The Act requires social media platforms featuring feeds comprised of user-generated content along with recommendations based on user data to restrict addictive features that may negatively impact young users. It mandates a default chronological feed for minors, featuring content exclusively from users they already follow, and allows parents to opt out of allowing minors access to social media platforms during specific time intervals. Furthermore, the Act imposes restrictions on social media platforms, prohibiting them from sending notifications to minors within specific time frames. Finally, the Act grants the Office of the Attorney General the power to bring actions against non-compliant platforms and establishes a right of action for parents and guardians.
