On 11 October 2023, the Stop Addictive Feeds Exploitation (SAFE) for Kids Act was introduced to the New York State Legislature. The Act would require social media platforms featuring feeds comprised of user-generated content along with recommendations based on user data to restrict addictive features that may negatively impact young users. The Act would mandate a default chronological feed for minors, featuring content exclusively from users they already follow. Furthermore, the Act would require platforms to allow parents to opt out of allowing minors access to social media platforms in specific time intervals. The Act would impose restrictions on social media platforms, prohibiting them from sending notifications to minors within specific time frames. Finally, the Act would give the Office of the Attorney General the power to bring actions against non-compliant platforms and establish a right of action for parents and guardians.
