On 5 June 2024, the Criminal Code Amendment (Deepfake Sexual Material) Act 2024 was introduced into the Australian House of Representatives. In particular, the Bill penalises the sharing of sexually explicit material without consent, especially material which was generated or altered by artificial intelligence (AI) or another technology, such as deepfakes. The Bill would penalise the sharing of non-consensual deepfake sexually explicit material with up to 6 years of imprisonment, and the creation of such material could lead to 7 years of imprisonment.
