On 1 May 2024, the Australian Government announced its intention to submit a Bill banning the creation and non-consensual distribution of deepfake pornography to the Parliament. In particular, the Government stated that the Bill would include measures against the digital creation and distribution of non-consensual sexually explicit material, classifying it as a form of abuse. Further, the Bill will include provisions to clarify that the use of technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to produce and disseminate such material without consent will result in the imposition of criminal penalties.
