Announced KPPU investigation into Shopee concerning alleged discriminatory market behaviour

On 28 May 2024, the Indonesian Competition Commission (KPPU) announced its investigation (04/KPPU-I/2024) into Shopee concerning its alleged discriminatory market behaviour. The investigation concerns PT Shopee International Indonesia and PT Nusantara Ekspres Kilat regarding courier services on the Shopee platform. The investigation addresses potential breaches of Article 19 letter d and Article 25 paragraph (1) letter a of Law Number 5 of 1999. The investigation highlights concerns over discriminatory algorithm settings and courier selection practices that may favour Shopee Express, potentially harming consumers and excluding competition. The KPPU is starting a 30-working-day examination period until 10 July 2024.
