Description

Opened EU Commission formal investigation into Meta for alleged breach of DSA in regards to protection of minors

On 16 May 2024, the European Commission announced the opening of a formal investigation into Meta regarding its compliance with the Digital Service Act (DSA), specifically focusing on the protection of minors. The Commission's investigation will focus on the potential behavioural addiction triggers in children resulting from the systems of both Facebook and Instagram, including their algorithms and the possible creation of addictive behaviour. Furthermore, the Commission will investigate Meta's age-assurance and verification methods. Additionally, the Commission will assess Meta's adherence to DSA obligations in implementing suitable and proportionate measures to ensure a high level of privacy, safety, and security for minors. This includes examining default privacy settings for minors integrated into the design and functioning of Meta's recommender systems.
