EU Council adopts conclusions by EU Commission to create a Joint Cyber Unit

On 19 October 2021, the Council of the European Union (EU) adopted conclusions in which it calls for the creation of a Joint Cyber Unit, as was recommended by the EU Commission. The Joint Cyber Unit should help combat the increasing number of cyber-attacks. In the document, the EU Council invites the Member States to “explore the potential” of a Joint Cyber Unit as part of the development and improvement of the cybersecurity crisis management framework. The EU Council also notes the importance of consolidating the existing networks. Furthermore, it stresses the need for more reflection on individual elements of the Joint Cyber Unit to avoid unnecessary duplication and ensure added value.
