Closed ACM investigation into Booking.com's Travel Sustainable Programme

On 25 March 2024, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) concluded its investigation into Booking's Travel Sustainable Programme. The ACM found that the programme's presentation was misleading, particularly the sustainability claims, which could imply that the travel options offered are sustainable. The programme awarded accommodations at a sustainability level and green leaves based on their efforts. However, it was criticised for potentially misleading consumers about the actual sustainability of the accommodations and for providing a distorted view of accommodations not participating in the programme. The ACM stated that Booking is revising its approach to sustainability claims in response to the ACM's concerns. The company is removing misleading information and working towards a system that relies on external certification to reflect accommodations' sustainability efforts.
