United States of America: Adopted Social Media Regulation Amendments Bill (SB 194) including age verification regulation

On 28 February 2024, the Social Media Regulation Amendments Bill (SB 194) was adopted. The Bill will require platforms to implement an age verification mechanism in order to address minors' unregulated social media use. The social media companies will be required to verify the age of their users to ensure that they are not minors. Further, the platforms will have to implement a review process in order for account holders to appeal the age determination if it was incorrectly determined. The Bill is set to enter into force on 1 October 2024.
