Description

Passed Social Media Regulation Amendments Bill (SB 194) including age verification regulation

On 21 February 2024, the Social Media Regulation Amendments Bill (SB 194) was passed by the Senate. The Bill would require platforms to implement an age verification mechanism in order to address minors' unregulated social media use. The social media companies would be required to verify the age of their users to ensure that they are not minors. Further, the platforms would have to implement a review process in order for account holders to appeal the age determination if it was incorrectly determined. The Bill is set to enter into force on 1 October 2024.
