United States of America: Introduced Bill relating to the Use of Artificial Intelligence by public bodies (SB 487)

On 31 January 2024, the Bill relating to the Use of Artificial Intelligence by public bodies (SB 487) was introduced to the Virginia Senate. The Bill 487 introduces an amendment in the nature of a substitute, proposing changes to Section 2.2-2007 of the Code of Virginia. In addition, the Bill amends the Code to establish a Commission on Artificial Intelligence. The Bill empowers the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence by public bodies, outlining policies, standards, and guidelines. It introduces a prohibition on public bodies' use of AI systems without complying with specified requirements and impact assessments. Moreover, the Bill establishes the Commission on Artificial Intelligence, outlining its purpose, membership, powers, and duties, with a sunset provision on 1 July 2027. The provisions related to AI will enter into force on 1 July 2025.
