Japan: Opened Consultation on Adapting Copyright Legislation for AI and ML Development

On 23 January 2024, the Agency for Cultural Affairs opened a consultation on the adaptation of copyright legislation in light of developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) until 12 February 2024. The consultation aims to address the challenges posed by AI-generated works and the need for legislation to take into account both the rights of creators and the innovative uses of AI. The consultation covers a range of topics, including the technical background of generative AI, the concerns of various stakeholders, and the legal aspects of AI-generated content.
