Closed investigation into TikTok regarding communication to consumers

On 30 November 2023, the Hungarian Competition Authority (GVH) closed the investigation into TikTok regarding communication to consumers. The GVH previously opened an investigation into TikTok due to the suspicion that TikTok was not providing consumers with the relevant information regarding the functioning of the platform, specifically what and how much data was processed when using the platform and how TikTok used this data. The investigation resulted in a commitment made by TikTok to ensure communication to its users. Concretely, the commitment entails the creation of a centralised worldwide Data Privacy Centre for informational purposes, TikTok videos to elaborate the key features of the platform, default settings for minors with an emphasis on promoting parental controls, the voluntary application of a 20% advertising limit, and providing forums to ensure direct feedback from the authorities or other child protection forums. The GVH will continuously monitor the implementation of the commitment.
