Announced establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI)

On 1 November 2023, the United States Department of Commerce (DOC) announced the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI) through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The USAISI was established based on the Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of AI. In particular, the USAISI will facilitate the development of standards for the security and testing of AI models, develop standards for the authentication of AI-generated content, and provide test environments for researchers to assess emerging AI risks and address known impacts. The USAISI will work with partners in academia, industry, government, and civil society. It will also strengthen international collaboration, such as with the United Kingdom's AI Safety Institute.
