On 1 January 2024, Assembly Bill 1194 "California Privacy Act of 2020: exemptions: abortion services", amending the California Privacy Rights Act (CPPA) entered into force. The Act provides that a consumer accessing, procuring, or searching for services regarding contraception, pregnancy care, and perinatal care, including abortion services, does not constitute a natural person being at risk or danger of death or serious physical injury. Consequently, businesses handling this information are exempt from the obligation to provide information to authorities requesting emergency access to a consumer’s personal information if a natural person is at risk or in danger of death or serious physical injury.
