Description

Implemented registration of online streaming services in modernisation of Canadian broadcasting system

On 29 September 2023, the Regulations for the Registration of Online Streaming Services came into effect in the context of the modernisation of the Canadian broadcasting system. The Regulations apply to streaming services, social media services, subscription television services that are available online, radio stations that live-stream over the Internet, services that offer podcasts, and services that offer unique transactions allowing the user to stream or download content. Exempted from the Regulations are online streaming services whose single activity and purpose consists of providing video game services, and online undertakings that either alone, or as part of a broadcasting ownership group, have less than CAD 10 million in annual broadcasting revenues in Canada. The registration has to be filed before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) until 28 November 2023 by all national or foreign online streaming services operating in Canada that offer broadcasting content and earn CAD 10 million or more in annual broadcasting revenues.
