On 12 May 2023, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) opened a consultation until 12 June 2023 on the proposed Regulations for the Registration of Online Streaming Services in the context of the modernisation of the Canadian broadcasting system. In particular, the consultation seeks to determine which online audio and video services operating in Canada should be registered with the CRTC and the registration information required from online streaming services. The Regulations also include registration exemptions in the following cases: (1) online streaming services whose single activity and purpose consists of providing video game services; (2) online streaming services whose single activity and purpose consists of providing unique transactions; (3) online streaming services affiliated with a broadcasting ownership group that has, after deducting any excluded revenue, annual Canadian gross revenues from broadcasting activities of less than $10 million; and (4)or online streaming services that have no affiliation with a broadcasting ownership group, if they have, after deducting any excluded revenue, annual Canadian gross revenues from broadcasting activities of less than $10 million.
