Italy: Issued ruling in investigation into Google including EUR 102 million for abuse of dominance in operating systems market

Description

Issued ruling in investigation into Google including EUR 102 million for abuse of dominance in operating systems market

On 13 May 2021, the Italian competition and markets authority (autorità garante della concorrenza e del mercato) sanctioned Google with a fine of EUR 102 million for violating Art. 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) by abusing its dominant position in the market of operating systems. Specifically, Google had prohibited Enel X Italia from being included in Android Auto, a driving feature that allows the usage of certain apps while driving. The Italian competition authority noted that this behaviour had the consequence of favouring Google's own mapping services, Google Maps. Furthermore, Google was ordered to make Android Auto available for all app developers.
