Launch of sectoral research into e-commerce

On 11 March 2020, the Hellenic Competition Commission launched a sectoral inquiry into the area of e-commerce. While the generally beneficial aspects of e-commerce were acknowledged, the Commission also noted the possible harmful effects of e-commerce on consumers. Instruments such as the usage of AI, algorithms and big data exploitation were noted as possible drivers of unilateral uncompetitive behaviour. The competence to do sectoral research stems from article 40 of law 3959/2011. The research comes as part of a wider investigation into the competitiveness of the digital economy in Greece.
