Japan: Closed consultation on Research Committee on Platform Services on draft report on direction for future consideration on measures against illegal and harmful information

On 30 June 2023, the public consultation closes on the Research Committee on Platform Services draft report on the direction for future consideration on measures against illegal and harmful information. The report was drafted by the Working Group on Countermeasures against Illegal and Harmful Information, such as defamation, which was established to study the countermeasures against illegal and harmful information adopted by online platforms and develop policies regarding content moderation. In its report, the working group outlines the current legal framework for requesting the deletion of content and addresses the platform's role in preventing the distribution of illegal and harmful information. Furthermore, the draft report outlines criteria and disclosure standards concerning deletion procedures, proposed by the working group, to achieve prompt and voluntary deletion based on platform terms of use.
