Description

Entry into force of extremism and hate crime law with grace period regarding reporting duty for platforms

The extremism and hate crime law, which introduces reporting and disclosure duties for certain digital platforms in case of criminal content, enters into force with a grace period until 1 February 2022. The duty applies to platforms with over 2 million users registered in Germany. Apart from removing illegal content, platforms will have to notify the authorities of the content and the IP address it stems from. The extremism and hate crime law expands the existing law on content moderation (Netzwerkdurchsetzungsgesetz).
