South African Competition Commission releases statement of issues of market inquiry

The South African Competition Commission (CCSA) released a statement of issues of its inquiry into online intermediation platform services (OIPMI) on 19 May 2021. Addressees of the inquiry include but aren't limited to eCommerce providers and mobile application stores. The focus of the inquiry is to investigate possible restrictions of competition law in the form of unilateral conduct and conglomeration, among others. The inquiry focuses on the competition between the platforms, the treatment of business users as well as the impact on SMEs and HDPs (firms controlled/owned by historically disadvantaged persons). The release of a further statement of issues is expected for mid-August 2021, with a publication of a final report expected for 18 November 2022.
