CMA launches investigation into Amazon and Google regarding fake and misleading online reviews

On 25 June 2021, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into Amazon and Google for not implementing effective enough measures against fake and misleading online reviews. It will be assessed if the two companies broke consumer law by not taking action against fake reviews. The investigation will focus on the way companies handle and react to fake and misleading reviews. More specifically, CMA will inquire on issues such as "paid" reviews, exploitation of customers through the misleading presentation of reviews, as well as suspicious reviews. Finally, companies that are found to have violated consumer protection and competition laws, will be sued in the court of law, the CMA states.
