CMA launches investigation regarding fake and misleading online reviews

On 22 May 2020, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into fake and misleading reviews. In the build-up to this investigation, Facebook and eBay have already committed to the cause and ramped up their fight against fake reviews themselves, the CMA states. The investigation will focus on the way companies handle and react to fake and misleading reviews. More specifically, CMA will inquire on issues such as "paid" reviews, exploitation of customers through the misleading presentation of reviews, as well as suspicious reviews. Finally, companies that are found to have violated consumer protection and competition laws, will be sued in the court of law, the CMA states.
