On 23 March 2023, the Social Media Regulation Act (SB 152), including data protection regulations, was signed into law by the Governor of Utah. In particular, the Act would prohibit social media companies from collecting minors' personal data and using data generated based on their activity, including posts, messages or text. The social media platforms would be able to collect minors' personal data and process it only for the purpose of age verification to comply with the service access restrictions that they would be required to implement for users under 18 years old. The data protection measures will come into force on 1 March 2024.
