On 28 August 2020, China's Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), along with the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), issued a newly adjusted version of the Catalogue of Technologies Prohibited and Restricted from Export, pursuant to the Foreign Trade Law of People’s Republic of China. The adjusted Catalogue removes a number of categories of technology subject to export restrictions while adding a number of others, including, notably, controls on "information processing technology". Such technology includes, specifically, speech synthesis and recognition technology, AI interface technology, and so-called push service technology which uses profiling to recommend content and services to users.
