Republic of Korea: Introduced Bill on artificial intelligence services amending the Personal Information Protection Act (Bill No 2120130)

On 20 February 2023, Bill number 2120130 on amending the Republic of Korea (ROK)'s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) was introduced in the National Assembly, focusing on strengthening the regulation regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) services such as ChatGPT. The Bill would expand the scope of PIPA to regulate personal data breaches involving AI systems. Under the Bill, the Personal Information Protection Commission would oversee and analyse the AI systems in the case of data leakage to determine compliance with the data protection requirements and implementation of corrective measures addressing code problems that allowed data breaches to occur.
