On 3 March 2023, US Senators Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren, and Mazie Hirono introduced the “Upholding Protections for Health and Online Location Data (UPHOLD) Privacy Act” (S.631) in the Senate, aiming to expand the protection of personal health data privacy. The Act would prohibit the use of personally identifiable health data for commercial advertising. The Act would also introduce additional restrictions on companies’ collection and sharing of personal health data without an individual user’s consent. Furthermore, the Act would prohibit data brokers from selling location data.
