Description

Adoption of Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy

On 9 July 2021, the U.S. President signs the Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy. The order aims to ensure competition in the digital sphere through stricter control of mergers involving big tech companies, especially serial mergers, mergers with nascent competitors as well as mergers leading to the accumulation of data and their effect on user privacy. Furthermore, the order encourages the FTC to establish rules barring unfair competition behaviour in online markets as well as re-establish net neutrality rules. Finally, the U.S. President also established a White House Competition Council which shall promote competition across government agencies.
