Announced Nigeria Data Protection Bill 2022 including business registration requirement

On 25 February 2023, the Nigerian Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the Nigeria Data Protection Bill 2022, including business registration requirements, which will now be introduced in the National Assembly. Specifically, data controllers or processors of major importance would be required to register with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission within six months of either the commencement of the Bill or their becoming a controllers or processor of major importance. The Commission would have the power of prescribing the definition of a data controller or processor of major importance.
