On 24 February 2023, the Data Privacy Act of 2023 (HR 1165) was introduced in the US House of Representatives. The Act would prohibit financial institutions from using, collecting, or sharing with third parties nonpublic personal information without the consent of an individual, subject to a number of exceptions. The Act would also require financial institutions to disclose, on request by consumers, the purposes of collection of nonpublic information and a description of the information collected.
