Announced Investigation into TikTok video streaming platform for privacy legislation compliance

On 23 February 2023, the privacy protection authorities of Canada, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta announced a joint investigation into the user-generated content video streaming platform TikTok. The investigation will be carried out by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta. The regulators will assess whether TikTok's practices are compliant with Canadian privacy legislation, including their acquisition of valid and significant consent for the collection, utilisation and disclosure of personal information. Furthermore, the investigation will focus on TikTok's practices for safeguarding minors' personal information.
