Announced investigation into Kakao Mobility Corp. for alleged violations of Personal Information Protection Act

On 17 October 2022, the Korean Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) announced that it is opening an investigation into Kakao Mobility Corp. Simultaneously, PIPC announced a strengthening of inspections due to the alleged infringement of the Korean Personal Protection Act. The PIPC stated that users of the Kakao T app were allegedly required to consent to the transfer of personal information to a third party, and for the users that rejected this requirement, the taxi service was refused. The PIPC will investigate the alleged practices' compliance with the data protection regulations.
