Adopted Online Safety Determination 2022

On 20 January 2022, the Australian Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts released the Online Safety (Basic Online Safety Expectations) Determination 2022. The Determination specifies the basic online safety expectations to be fulfilled by social media services, as well as internet and other electronic service providers. These expectations are set out in Article 46 of the Online Safety Act 2021 (Cth) and specified in the Determination. The safety expectations include obligations for online platforms, including the minimisation of illegal and harmful content as well as the protection of children from exposure to inappropriate content. Providers are further obliged to have a working report and complaint mechanism in place while keeping a record of such reports and complaints for a minimum of five years.
