European Union: Issued EDPS Opinion on Proposal for a Regulation on data collection and sharing relating to short-term accommodation rental services

Description

Issued EDPS Opinion on Proposal for a Regulation on data collection and sharing relating to short-term accommodation rental services

On 16 December 2022, the Summary Opinion of the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) on the "Proposal for a Regulation on data collection and sharing relating to short-term accommodation rental services” was issued. The Regulation in question aims to increase transparency in the short-term accommodation rental market by requiring platforms to share data on their rentals every month with local authorities. Notably, the EDPS recommends that the Regulation specify the categories of personal data to be submitted by hosts to the competent authorities and to clarify the maximum period during which personal data will be stored. The EDPS also recommends to make clear that the Regulation excludes the use of personal data processed for law enforcement or for taxation and customs purposes. Further, the EDPS recommends to specify whether the Single Digital Entry Point system would store personal data.
