Description

Introduced Automated Decision System Rights in Social Media Bill (S 404)

On 18 January 2023, the S 404 Bill relating to online age verification requirements was introduced in the South Carolina Senate. The Bill states that any website, platform, application or service may not use any "automated decision system" to display content to minors. The platforms and website operators will be required to verify the user's age using a third-party verification service to ensure that the user is above 18 years old. The entities will be able to verify the age of users by requiring their personal information, including name, address, and phone number, and verify it through publicly available information. Alternatively, users may also upload a government-issued ID with a current photo. Once the age is verified, automated decision systems may be used to display content to users.
