Announced CCI investigation into Google's alleged abuse of dominance in news aggregation (Case No. 10 of 2022)

On 2 February 2022, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) opened an investigation (Case No. 10 of 2022) into Google (Alphabet) following a complaint by the “Indian Newspaper Society”. The Association alleges that Google abused its dominant market position in news aggregation by imposing terms and conditions that favour the company. In particular, the “Indian Newspaper Society” claimed that Google is not transparent in regards to its search algorithm, noting that the search results are “displayed based on predetermined algorithm” and not determined by the relevance of the content.
