Announced ACMA cybersecurity investigation into Optus following breach

On 11 October 2022, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in coordination with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (AIC) opened an investigation into Singtel Optus Pty Limited (Optus). The investigation specifically concerns the data breach declared by Optus on 22 September 2022. The ACMA will focus on Optus's role as a telecommunication service provider and determine whether "reasonable steps" were taken to protect user data and implement an up-to-standard security system.
