On 25 January 2023, the public consultation closed on the draft amendments to the IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, in relation to online gaming. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology extended the deadline from 17 January 2023 to 25 January 2023. In particular, the draft would require self-regulatory bodies related to gaming to register with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, allowing these bodies to register games by members (online gaming intermediaries). Finally, the registered self-regulatory bodies will be required to resolve complaints related to online gaming through a grievance redressal mechanism. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology will adopt the final rules after processing the comments received during the public consultation.
