Announced USD 20 million settlement between Indiana AG and Google regarding location data tracking practices

On 29 December 2022, the Attorney General of Indiana announced a settlement of USD 20 million with Google to resolve Indiana’s lawsuit against Google for deceptive location tracking practices. In the lawsuit, it was alleged that Google falsely represented the extent to which users are able to control how their location data is collected, used, and monetized, thus violating the Indiana Deceptive Consumer Sales Act. As part of the settlement agreement, Google will be required to have “pop-up” notifications to inform users if their location history is enabled. Further, Google will have to maintain a webpage disclosing its practices and policies concerning user location information. Finally, Google will have to provide instructions to users about how to control Google's access to and use of their location information.
