Announced UK-Japan Digital Partnership including cooperation on artificial intelligence and semiconductors

On 7 December 2022, the United Kingdom and Japan announced the launch of a Digital Partnership, including commitments to cooperate in setting standards for artificial intelligence (AI) and the semiconductor sector. In regard to the semiconductors, the parties agreed to cooperate to ensure the reliability of the supply of semiconductors and invest in the research and development of semiconductors. Concerning AI, the parties agreed to support the development of a “trustworthy, human-centric and responsible” application of AI. Furthermore, the parties will collaborate internationally, including within the Global Partnership on AI, OECD and Council of Europe to develop standards and regulations for AI use.
