Announced Online News Act including content remuneration regulation

On 4 December 2022, the Government of New Zealand announced that it will introduce a new law requiring large online platforms, such as Google and Meta, to pay domestic media companies for publishing local news content on their platforms. The new law would also create a backstop for negotiations between local news companies and platforms, prescribing a negotiation process and mandatory bargaining steps if agreements are not reached in the first instance.
