European Union: Requested ECJ preliminary ruling in Cases C-793/19 ECJ/SpaceNet and C-794/19/Telekom Deutschland on general and indiscriminate retention of traffic and location data

On 29 October 2019, the German Bundesverwaltungsgericht submitted a reference for a preliminary ruling to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Cases C-793/19 ECJ/SpaceNet and C-794/19/Telekom Deutschland on the general and indiscriminate retention of traffic and location data. The reference seeks a preliminary ruling on whether EU Law precludes the general and indiscriminate preventative retention of traffic and location data by telecommunications providers on public security grounds introduced by the German Law on Telecommunications.
