Senacon issues 6.6 million fine over Facebook’s illegal sharing of Brazilians' personal data with Cambridge Analytica

On 23 August 2022, the Brazilian National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) issued a fine of BRL 6.6 million to Facebook following an investigation which determined that the company shared illegally the data of Brazilian users. The Senacon stated that Facebook’s sharing of the data of approximately 443’000 Brazilians with Cambridge Analytica in 2018 was illegal. Furthermore, Senacon noted that the company failed to develop a privacy policy that would allow for such transfers, inform users about its policy and establish appropriate data protection measures.
