Description

Guide on Personal Data Protection Considerations for Blockchain Design issued

On 18 July 2022, Singapore's Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) issued the Guide on Personal Data Protection Considerations for Blockchain Design. The Guide provides advice on how data protection by design can be ensured for blockchain applications, given the unique data protection risks arising from the decentralised and final nature of data stored on blockchain technology. In particular, the PDPC makes recommendations on best practices based on whether a given application is permissionless (usable by anyone) or permissioned (allowing control of use), as well as mentioning several alternative non-blockchain methods which can be used to supplement an application and ensure compliance with data protection obligations.
