Introduced Digital Charter Implementation Act 2022 including data protection regulation

On 16 June 2022, the Digital Charter Implementation Act 2022 was introduced in the Canadian House of Commons. The Act consists of three parts, named the Consumer Privacy Protection Act, the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act, and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act respectively. It contains extensive regulations amending Canada's data protection regime, primarily contained in the Consumer Privacy Protection Act. The data protection regulations apply to all entities collecting personal information for commercial purposes, making them accountable for the personal information under their control. Entities can only collect, use, or disclose personal information for appropriate purposes, and require the prior consent of individuals. Further, the Act limits the retention period of personal information and gives individuals the right to access information about their held personal information. Finally, the Act would establish the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal with jurisdiction over actions brought under the Consumer Privacy Protection Act.
