European Commission publishes five key principles of fair advertising to children

The European Commission and the European Consumer Protection Network published five key principles of fair advertising to children that were formulated by representatives from consumer and data protection authorities and that need to be taken into account by (online) advertisers and marketing strategy developers. These principles are the following: 1) (Online) Providers must not design or run their interface in a way that deceives minors or improperly induces them to perform a certain action; 2) The susceptibility of children, whether due to their age or their credulity, should not be exploited; 3) When marketing information is intended for children or may be viewed by them, the purpose of the marketing should be stated in a child-friendly and understandable manner; 4) In-app purchases should not be targeted, pressured, or otherwise pushed on children; 5) Children should not be profiled for the purpose of advertising.
