Announced ban of Huawei and ZTE from Canadian telecommunications systems

On 19 May 2022, the Canadian Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry announced that the Canadian government will prohibit the use of Huawei and ZTE products and services in the telecommunications systems of the country. Particularly, the telecommunications companies operating in Canada will no longer be able to use equipment provided by Huawei and ZTE and the companies that already installed such equipment will have to remove it. The government justified the ban with concerns regarding the safety and security of Canadians and critical telecommunications infrastructure.
