Description

Adopted UK-Japan CEPA including data protection regulation

On 23 October 2020, the Agreement for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership between Japan and UK was signed. Article 8.80 requires the parties to adopt and maintain a legal framework that guarantees the protection of the personal information of electronic commerce users. Particularly, the parties should take into account the principles and guidance of relevant international bodies and encourage the development of mechanisms to promote compatibility between the different regimes (i.e., the recognition of regulatory outcomes and the creation of broader international frameworks). The Partnership will enter into force on 1 January 2021.
